Re:Creators (Japanese: ????????, Hepburn: Re:Kurieit?zu, stylized as Re:CREATORS) is a Japanese anime television series produced by Troyca. The series is about a high school student who becomes involved in a battle between several characters from manga, anime, and video games who somehow appear in the real world. It aired from April 8 to September 16, 2017, and was exclusively streamed by Amazon on their Amazon Video service. A manga adaptation by Daiki Kase was announced on February 18, 2017.

Plot

S?ta Mizushino is a young high school student and anime fan who dreams of writing his own light novel. While watching the anime adaptation of the mecha light novel Elemental Symphony of Vogelchevalier to look for inspiration, the tablet computer he is watching it on sputters and drags him into the anime's world, where he witness a battle between the anime's character Selesia and a mysterious girl wearing a military uniform. After returning with Selesia, S?ta discovers that other characters from different stories and forms of media were also brought to the real world, with some of them aligned with the military uniform girl, who promised them the ways to end the strife in their worlds and a way back home, unaware of her true intentions. To stop her, S?ta and Selesia agree to find the other characters and bring them home; lest the military uniform princess will bring untold destruction to every world that exists.

S?ta Mizushino (????, Mizushino S?ta)

A 16-year old high school student who likes to draw, but suffers from artists block. He was once friends with Altair's creator, Setsuna. However, he grew jealous of her because of how everyone liked her drawings while his mostly went ignored. As a result of this, he brushed her off when she was accused of plagiarism. However, after learning that she committed suicide, he was left traumatized with self-loathing. As a result, upon learning Altair's true identity, he initially kept this a secret from the others, unable to face his demons. However, he eventually pulls through and resolves to stop Altair to atone for his actions. Following the final battle, he begins moving on and once again starts drawing, having learned that his own approval is all that matters.
Altair (?????, Arutairu) / Military Uniform Princess (?????, Gunpuku no Himegimi)
Voiced by: Aki Toyosaki
A mysterious young girl who brought the other creations into the real world in order to force their creators to alter their worlds. However, she is actually aiming for the destruction of the real world, out of hatred and sorrow for the death of her own creator. It is eventually revealed that she's a character from the music video Altair: World Étude created by S?ta's deceased friend, Setsuna. Being a creation without a story, she is able to adopt powers from fan-fictions about her; she calls this ability "Holopsicon". However, overusing these abilities will cause her to fade from the real world, though she can bypass this limitation by getting her viewers' approval. She nearly succeeds in destroying the real world during the events of the Elimination Chamber Festival, until she is confronted by a creation version of Setsuna. Ultimately convinced by Setsuna to relinquish her desire for world destruction, she instead uses her powers to create a new world for her and Setsuna to live together for eternity.
Setsuna Shimazaki (???????, Shimazaki Setsuna) / Yuna Shimazaki (?? ??, Shimazaki Yuna)
Voiced by: Ayaka ?hashi
The late creator of the online video called Altair: World Étude, from which Altair originated. She and S?ta were friends until they drifted apart once she became a popular artist. However, her popularity caused those jealous of her success to accuse her of plagiarism, causing her to commit suicide prior to the start of the series. Her death sets the events of the series into motion, causing Altair's hatred towards humanity and leaving S?ta traumatized.

Creations

Creations (???, Hiz?butsu) are fictional characters that are taken out from various forms of 2D entertainment such as anime, manga, light novels, and video games by the "Military Uniform Princess". Much like in their respective worlds, they are able to use their own powers, making them unbalanced with normal humans in the real world. Characters that can be taken out are those who receive approval and 'enough' popularity from their readers and viewers.

Selesia Upitiria (???????????, Serejia Yupitiria)
Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu
The main female protagonist of the anime Elemental Symphony of Vogelchevalier (???????????????, Seireikis?kyoku F?gerushubarie) that was adapted from a light novel of the same name. She is a princess and a knight who, alongside her partner Charon, fights against the series' antagonists. She fights using a sword and is capable of flight. She also owns a mecha called Vogelchevalier, which can be used to cast magic spells. She later also gained the ability to use fire magic, though this was only temporary. Upon arriving in the real world, she initially struggled to cope with the revelation that she's a creation, but quickly came to terms with it. She has a complicated relationship with her creator, Takashi; while initially not getting along, they eventually gained a mutual respect for one-another. She became both the third and fourth creation to die when she sacrificed herself to stop Charon.
Meteora Österreich (????????????, Meteora Esut?raihi)
Voiced by: Inori Minase, Sayaka Ohara (delusion; ep. 13)
An NPC from the open world RPG Avalken of Reminisce (?????????, Tsuioku no Avaruken). She is a vendor at the last safe-point before the final dungeon. Being an exposition character, she's an intellectual person who talks a lot. She can fly as and create magical barriers. However, she lacks offensive abilities, relying on real world artillery instead. She later also acquires the ability to summon other creations into the real world and return them to their own, though she can't use it on herself. Upon arriving in the real world, she becomes the leader of S?ta's group. She survives the final battle, but can't return to her own world and thus stays in the real world with her powers disappearing. Afterwards, she becomes an author and writes a story titled "Re:CREATORS".
Mamika Kirameki (?????, Kirameki Mamika)
Voiced by: Rie Murakawa
The main protagonist of the magical girl anime series Magical Slayer Mamika (?????????????, Majikaru Sureiy? Mamika). She is a member of the team of magical girls that fight the series' antagonist. She can fly and fire heart-shaped magical projectiles. While not dangerous in her world, her attacks are deadly in the real world. Being from a series aimed at children, she was initially very naive; trying to reason with others, yet quickly resorting to violence if they don't agree with her. However, upon realizing the hypocrisy of her actions, she begins to question her morals. While initially a supporter of Altair, she turns against her after discovering her true motives. She is the first creation to die after succumbing to wounds she sustained while fighting Altair.
Y?ya Mirokuji (?????, Mirokuji Y?ya)
Voiced by: Kenichi Suzumura
The main antagonist of the Lockout Ward Underground -Dark Night- (???underground-dark night-, Heisaku Underground - dark night -) action manga. He was once the captain of a military outpost and the best friend of Sh?, until he killed their friend along with his sister and deserted the team. In reality, however, he didn't kill anyone and was set up by the true culprit. Afterwards, he formed a gang to take control of the Adachi ward, which had become a lawless land following a natural disaster. He fights using a bokken called "Kuronagimaru" that can produce powerful gusts of air and can also summon a spirit called an "Astral Double" named "Hangaku" to fight by his side. Upon arriving in the real world, he shows no interest in altering his world and only desires to fight strong opponents, which eventually prompts him to join S?ta's group. He survives the final battle and returns to his own world.
Alicetaria February (?????????????, Arisuteria Feburar?)
Voiced by: Y?ko Hikasa
The protagonist of the fantasy epic manga and anime franchise Alicetaria of the Scarlet (?????????, Hiiro no Arisuteria). She is a princess and a knight who constantly fights a losing battle against the series' antagonists. She fights using a lance and possesses the "Gauntlet of Götz von Berlichingen" that allows her to use magic. She can also summon a pegasus to mount. Upon arriving in the real world, she gained an intense hatred towards her creator, Gai, for making her world into such a dark setting for the sake of "entertainment". She desired to use the creators' power to save her world and fell into denial upon learning that this is impossible. She also suffered from a mild identity crisis upon learning that she's a creation. However, after learning how much people sympathized with her and her struggles, she had a change of heart. While initially loyal to Altair, she grew suspicious towards her after Mamika's death and eventually turned against her. She's the second creation to die, killed by Altair.
Blitz Talker (?????????, Burittsu T?k?)
Voiced by: Atsushi Ono
A secondary character from the cyberpunk anime and manga Code?Babylon. He is a middle-aged ex-detective and the partner of the main character. He works for the Flashlight Detective Office, which specializes in hunting down demi-humans and synthetic monsters. He possesses a watch that allows him to fly and fights using a gun. He also possesses special bullets called Gravity Bombs. Upon arriving in the real world, he sides with Altair because she reminds him of his deceased daughter, Erina, and to get revenge on his creator, Shunma, for killing her. However, Shunma resurrected Erina and gave him the option to return with her to their world, prompting him to betray Altair. He survives the final battle and returns to his own world.
Rui Kanoya (????, Kanoya Rui)
Voiced by: Sora Amamiya
The main protagonist of the mecha anime Infinite Divine Machine Mono Magia (?????????, Mugen Shinki Mono Magia). In the year 2124, he protects the "virtual city, Energia Ichihara" from the series' antagonists. While normally pretty energetic, he also get whiny easily. He pilots the giant robot "Gigas Machina", which is equipped with a huge arsenal of futuristic weapons. As a child soldier he was constantly thrust into battle without ever really knowing why, never having had the chance to enjoy life. Thus, upon coming to the real world, he takes the opportunity to enjoy life the best he can. Upon learning that he's a creation, he isn't dismayed and even comes to take pride in being his series' protagonist. He joins S?ta's group simply because they are the first other creations he meets after coming to the real world. He survives the final battle and returns to his own world.
Magane Chikuj?in (?????, Chikuj?in Magane)
Voiced by: Maaya Sakamoto
An antagonist from the light novel and anime series Record of the Night Window Demon (????, Yas?kiroku). She puts on the guise of a energetic high school student, but is really a psychotic murderer who killed the entire student body of her school. She possesses an ability called "Infinite Deception of Words" that allows her to bend reality through lies; if she tells a lie somebody rejects that lie she can make the initial claim become real. Upon arriving in the real world, she becomes a chaos-factor, allying herself with neither faction and causing trouble for both sides, as well as becoming a foil to S?ta. However, she eventually takes a liking to S?ta and decides to aid his side during the final battle. She survives the final battle and remains in the real world, though her ultimate fate remains unknown.
Hikayu Hoshikawa (?? ???, Hoshikawa Hikayu)
Voiced by: Shiina Natsukawa
A heroine from the all-ages version of adult dating sim game The Milky Way of a Starry Sky (????????????, Hoshizora?Miruk?wei). She is found by Selesia and Rui. As she has no fighting powers at all, her creator comes up with the idea of creating a fan disk to give her some. As a result, she fights using a Nunchaku and monstrous strength, and calls herself "Extreme Final Legend Martial Artist", even though she herself is embarrassed over it. She survives the final battle and returns to her own world.
Sh? Hakua (???, Hakua Sh?)
Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto
The main protagonist of the Lockout Ward Underground -Dark Night- (???underground-dark night-, Heisaku Underground - dark night -) action manga. He was once Y?ya's best friend and served under him as a member of a military outpost, until Y?ya killed his friend along with his sister and deserted the team. Afterwards, he was granted the ability to summon a spirit called an "Astral Double" named "Bayard" by a fortuneteller and traveled to the Adachi ward to take revenge on Y?ya. In reality, however, the fortuneteller was the true culprit and set Y?ya up. He fights using a retractable three-section staff and can summon "Bayard" to fight by his side. "Bayard" can also attack from multiple angles at once by materializing itself from reflections. Upon arriving in the real world, he allies himself with Altair simply because she is Y?ya's enemy. However, he switched sides after learning the truth. He survives the final battle and returns to his own world.
Erina Talker (????????, Erina T?k?)
Voiced by: Manaka Iwami
A supporting character from the cyberpunk anime and manga Code?Babylon. She is Blitz's daughter. At some point in the story, she was abducted by an antagonist and fused to a machine that would open a portal to another dimension and unleash monsters into the world. This forced Blitz to kill her in order to prevent a monster outbreak. Her death caused Blitz to develop an intense hatred against their creator, Shunma, and seek revenge against her. However, she was resurrected by Shunma and brought into the real world by Meteora during the events of the Elimination Chamber Festival to be used as a hostage to force Blitz to betray Altair. She survives the final battle and returns to her own world.
Charon Seiga (???????, Karon Seiga)
Voiced by: Daisuke Ono
The main male protagonist of the Elemental Symphony of Vogelchevalier (???????????????, Seireikis?kyoku F?gerushubarie) light novel series. He is a knight who, alongside his partner Selesia, fights against the series' antagonists. However, as the series progressed and the fighting continued with seemingly no end in sight, his revolve began to waver. He fights using a sword and pilots a darker version of "Vogelchevalier". Upon arriving in the real world and learning that he's a creation, he couldn't handle it anymore and fell into despair. He thus allied himself with Altair in order to use the power of the creators to save his world. He is both the third and fourth creation to die when Selesia sacrificed herself to stop him.

Creators

Creators (???, S?z?shu) are people who created the Creations. They can be the scenario writer, character designer, planner, or the author of their respective series. They are able to 'upgrade' their respective characters if they received enough positive responses from readers and viewers.

Takashi Matsubara (???, Matsubara Takashi) / Takeshi ?sawa (?? ??, ?sawa Takeshi)
Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi
Takashi is the original author of the light novel Elemental Symphony of Vogelchevalier. While he and Selesia initially clashed over his attitude towards her, he has developed a greater sense of respect for her, and began to care for her just like his own daughter.
Marine (???) / Ayano K?ura (?? ??, K?ura Ayano)
Voiced by: Hisako Kanemoto
Marine is the illustrator of the light novel Elemental Symphony of Vogelchevalier. She takes custody of Selesia and Meteora since S?ta couldn't continue to provide for them. She is actually rather insecure about her illustrations, believing them to be inferior to those of other great illustrators. However, she uses this insecurity as resolve to continue to improve her drawing skills.
Masaaki Nakanogane (??? ??, Nakanogane Masaaki)
Voiced by: Ry? Sugisaki
The screenplay and scenario writer for the anime Infinite Divine Machine Mono Magia.
Shunma Suruga (?? ??, Suruga Shunma) / Chika ?sawa (?? ??, ?sawa Chika)

The chill author of manga series Code?Babylon who speaks in Kansai dialect. She's often mistaken as a man due her pen name and art style. As a result of a history of having her stories rejected by her audience, she has grown very cynical towards the entertainment industry. This also causes her to be willing to go very far to make sure her stories remain interesting, even if it means killing off characters in horrible ways.
Ry? Yat?ji (??? ?, Yat?ji Ry?) / Ry?suke G?da (?? ??, G?da Ry?suke)

The author of manga series Lockout Ward Underground -Dark Night-. Despite his abrasive personality, he actually cares about other people, and is thus labeled a tsundere by Suruga.
Gai Takarada (??? ?, Takarada Gai) / Naoya Takarada (?? ??, Takarada Naoya)

The author of manga series Alicetaria of the Scarlet. He was locked away by Alicetelia out of her anger towards him (due to the fact that her cruel world is just entertainment) until S?ta expressed his feelings towards her story. After being released by Aliceteria, he joins the effort to defeat Altair.
Nishio ?nishi (?? ???, ?nishi Nishio)
Voiced by: Jun Fukushima
The writer for The Milky Way of a Starry Sky, who belongs to the company Hyper Tension and is an old friend of Masaaki's. He's a huge otaku and a pervert who fell in love with his own creation.
Nobuyuki Sakamoto (?? ??, Sakamoto Nobuyuki)
The planner of Avalken of Reminisce, who died due to a car accident prior to the story.
Tenky? Kurakuma (?? ??, Kurakuma Tenky?)
Author of the light novel Record of the Night Window Demon, who was killed by his own creation Magane in his apartment.

Manga

A manga adaptation by Daiki Kase was announced on February 18, 2017 in the March 2017 issue of the Monthly Sunday Gene-X magazine published by Shogakukan.

Another manga adaptation by Y?ki Kumagai that served as a spin-off to the main anime series that focused on a different set of characters titled Re:Creators One More! (Re:CREATORS ????!) is serialized in the Monthly Sh?nen Sunday magazine also published by Shogakukan. The manga ended serialization on November 10, 2017.

Anime

The series' original concept is by Rei Hiroe and directed by Ei Aoki. Hiroe provided the original character designs, Ryuichi Makino provided the adapted character designs and Hiroyuki Sawano composed the music for the anime. The series aired in Japan from April 8 to September 16, 2017 on Tokyo MX and other television networks, and was simulcast exclusively on Amazon's Amazon Video service. The first opening theme is "gravityWall" by SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Tielle & Gemie, and the ending theme song is "NewLook" by Mashiro Ayano. The second opening theme is "sh0ut" by SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Tielle & Gemie, and the ending theme song is "Rubicon" (????, Rubikon) by Sangatsu no Phantasia. Episode 13 features an ending song by Aki Toyosaki under her character name Altair titled "World Étude". The anime ran for 22 episodes with 3 special programs.
